What does it mean to have a mother? A father? Friend? Lover? What constitutes the duty of each title? How do these people build you up or tear you down? Let me put it this way, what defines the title of your relationship? Based on the state of things between you and the person, what would you use to describe them and the interaction? According to the dictionary’s standards, to perceive is to obtain the awareness of something or someone. It is important to me to keep that in mind. I seek that kind or awareness for each and every person that has an affect on me. I know what my relationships are but do I understand them? You may ask what is the difference between knowing and understanding but I would tell you there is a large difference. I know that I am a son, brother, uncle, nephew, grandson and friend but do I understand what the affect of these rolls mean to the people I hold dear, and vice versa? People are not perfect and growing with them means that your interactions are imperfect, they are complicated, torn, and patched up. The photos that I have created are portraits where the subject is engaging with the viewer much in the way a relationship works. The purpose of this project is to take in and be taken in equally and honestly, the subject is not able to retort to the word I choose but the gaze holds a world of emotions and thoughts within itself.

The Quality of our relationship is attentive.

"Son, it bothers me that you don't make time for yourself to eat before you leave. I know you are a busy college student and that you live your life on the go so I try to make sure that you have a lunch packed for he rest of the day..."
